First flying in October 1940, The North American P-51 Mustang was American fighter aircraft developed by the North American Aviation Company between 1940-1945. The P-51 became one the most successful fighter aircraft of the Second World War. With over 15,000 built, The P-51 served with many air forces at the time including the USAAF, RAF & the Royal Canadian Air Force.
From late 1943, P-51Bs and P-51Cs (supplemented by P-51Ds from mid-1944) were used by the USAAF's Eighth Air Force to escort bombers in raids over Germany, while the RAF's Second Tactical Air Force and the USAAF's Ninth Air Force used the Merlin-powered Mustangs as fighter-bombers, roles in which the Mustang helped ensure Allied air superiority in 1944. The P-51 was also used by Allied air forces in the North African, Mediterranean, Italian and Pacific theaters. During World War II, Mustang pilots claimed to have destroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft.
The P-51D was heavilly used in the fight against the Luftwaffe during the later years of the war as bomber escorts over Germany & Italy & ground attack aircraft, gaining the nickname "Tankbusters". The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African-American and Caribbean-born military pilots (fighter and bomber) who fought in World War II. They formed the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the United States Army Air Forces. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces. Their aircraft were marked by red bands & rudders, which gained them the nickname "Red Tails".
The Tuskegee Airmen had an impressive record with 1578 combat missions, 179 bomber escort missions, 112 enemy aircraft destroyed in the air, another 150 on the ground & 950 rail cars, trucks and other motor vehicles destroyed.
