1934 ordered the German Reichsbahn at AEG four and at BBC / Kraus Maffei three C coupled locomotives. The AEG locomotives differ visually from the BBC machines through the angular and flatter stems, were a bit slower but had more power at 725 kW. After delivery, the locomotives were stationed in Munich and Stuttgart.
At the DB, the locomotives were in Augsburg, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Munich and Stuttgart. 1960/61, the locomotives were extensively modernized and got Rangierbühnen and additional windows and the red paint of the DB. From 1976-79 the locomotives renamed in 1968 from BR 163 were retired. The last locomotive is No. 163 002. The museum locomotives still have E63 01 and E63 02.
