JR Kishi 80 Diesel Railcar

The Kiha 81 made its debut in 1960 as the first of the first diesel express Kiha 80 series trains, running on the "Hatsukari" express. It features a unique bonnet shape, and has since led various express trains. The Kiha 82 900 series was introduced after 1968, when the first batch of KiRo 80 cars were converted into leading cars. It features the window arrangement of the Green Car era, and after being used on the "Inaho", "Tsubasa", and "Hitachi", it was transferred to Hokkaido and used on the "Okhotsk" and "Hokuto". The Kiha 82 series was born based on the Kiha 81 series, which had a proven track record on the Tohoku express "Hatsukari", with the aim of making non-electrified main line diesel trains into express trains and increasing the frequency of these trains.

At the same time, the dining car Kisi 80, equipped with a driving engine, was also introduced. It made its debut in October 1961 as the "Hakucho" limited express on the Japan Sea Main Line, and continued to serve for a long time as a star express train on main and sub-main lines connecting major cities and regional cities, such as the "Oozora" in Hokkaido, the "Kamome" between Kyoto and Nagasaki, and the "Matsukaze" Sanin Limited Express, and is regarded as the perfect form of JNR diesel express trains.
