Have you ever wanted to create a harbour or quay scene on your railway, but found it was too difficult or certain items weren’t available on the market? Well with two recent releases from the Gaugemaster Fordhampton range you can create a realistic harbour scene to suit your railway.

All you will need to create a harbour scene is the below:

Step 1

Draw a line on your baseboard where you want your harbour to be and when you are happy, cut along the line to reveal a cut-out. However, do not chuck the piece you have cut out away as this will be used as the harbour floor to create the height difference.

Step 2

Now here comes the fun part, creating the harbour! Paint the harbour floor a base colour, ideally dark green. This is just the first coat as once the harbour is built you can weather the dark green with a black wash for added effect.

Step 3

Once the paint has dried use the Fordhampton Dockside Walling Kit to create the look of a harbour wall. By cutting and gluing this kit together you can make it fit any angles that you have created. The kit also comes with mooring posts and edging to keep things neat. These can be added as required.

Using a water effect such as the Deluxe Material Aqua Magic you can now add a realistic water coating over the harbour floor. Site the crane in a suitable position. The Dockside Walling kit also comes with a barge, which can be used to add extra detail.

And that’s it! You have now created a basic harbour or quay. if you wanted to weather the harbour for a more realistic look you can with rusty paint colours and washes to achieve the look of a battered quay.
