Any OO Scale British modeller will be familiar with the Hornby style hook and loop couplings supplied on their rolling stock for many years. Other manufacturers have created their own versions to couple up, but like the Hornby versions, these do not look that prototypical. To overcome this, many modellers swap these for the Kadee knuckle couplings. These couplings are smaller, more discrete, and closer to some prototype operations. That and they can be uncoupled without the need for the 'Hand of God'. Sadly this is not an option for N Scale modellers.

The Long Magnetic Couplings

So what is the answer? Well, Dapol have produced their own range of N scale magnetic couplings. These couplings work in a similar way to the Kadee coupling, in the fact they couple up with a knuckle style coupling and they can be uncoupled remotely.

They are available in both long and short sizes, allowing you to have a larger or smaller gap between your rolling stock. Available in packs of 5 or pairs, you have the option of converting all of your items over in time, or simply the beginning and end couplings in a rake.

The couplings are designed to be simply pushed into a NEM pocket on your locomotive, coach or wagon. You will find that some rolling stock is not currently available with NEM pockets, and Dapol have covered this too. Within the range is a conversion pack, allowing you to remove your existing couplings and replace them with NEM pockets. You can then purchase the Magnetic Coupling Pockets on their own and convert further models.

The Magnetic Coupling Conversion Kit contains parts and tools to allow you to install 6 pockets.

Once installed, you will want a way of disconnecting the wagons. This can be done in a couple of ways. Within the range is a pack of magnets. These can be set into the track where uncoupling is required. These will uncouple the couplings when the train is run over them.

The Magnetic Coupling Magnets.

Hopefully that has shone a light on this part of the Dapol range, and possibly will alleviate some of the issues N Scale modellers face with the 'hand of god'. All that's left to say is happy uncoupling.
