The CIWL introduced the train for the first time in the winter of 1896/97 to satisfy the demand of the European upper class, whose main holiday destination in the winter time was the Riviera, also outside France and Great Britain. Like all CIWL luxury trains at that time, the Vienna-Nice-Cannes-Express consisted exclusively of sleeping cars, dining cars and luggage trolleys.
