A Hornby track rubber is the easiest way to clean most dirt from the top surface of your rails and ensure a good electrical contact.
Other Track Rubbers are available, but should you need something a little more abrasive, to burnish the rails with, then you should use PEPL-41 Pecoelectronics Rail Cleaning Block.
