OO Scale Hawthorn Leslie 0-4-0 Locomotive - New Tooling

Hawthorn Leslie and Company was formed by the merger of the shipbuilder A. Leslie and Company in Hebburn with the locomotive works of R. and W. Hawthorn at St.Peter’s in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1886. The company manufactured locomotives to order for mainline companies and later had a number of standard designs including 0-4-0 saddle tanks and fireless locomotives.

In 1937, Robert Stephenson of Darlington amalgamated with the locomotive works at Forth Banks to form Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns Ltd. By this time Hawthorn Leslie had built 2,783 locomotives. The newly formed Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns became a subsidiary of the Vulcan Foundry in 1943 and Hawthorn’s 137-year connection with Forth Banks ended.

The Dapol model is based on the 0-4-0 saddle tanks built between 1899 and 1924. They were produced in large numbers and continued in a variety of industrial uses (included Iron works, collieries and power stations) until the early to mid 1970s. Over 10 locomotives have made it into various states of preservation.

OO Scale LSWR B4 0-4-0 Locomotive - New Liveries

In 1890, Adams ordered 20 powerful four-coupled tank engines from Nine Elms Works, the design being preferred to six-coupled because of the many poorly laid out goods yards and the sharply curved Cattewater and Sutton Harbour lines at Plymouth.

When the South Western gained control of Southampton docks in 1892 Adams transferred two engines there which had their cab front and back sheets cut away to aid visibility and were named 'Jersey' and 'Guernsey'. Over the next few years, twelve more were transferred to the docks, including two of the five built by Drummond.

All 25 engines were taken into BR stock in January 1948; however fourteen were withdrawn over the next year, leaving just eleven survivors, distributed to Eastleigh, Plymouth, Bournemouth and Ashford. The last two representatives stationed at Winchester were withdrawn in October 1963, a month short of their seventieth birthday. Happily, both have been preserved.

OO Scale Class 73 Locomotive - New Liveries

The British Rail Class 73 is a type of Bo-Bo electro-diesel locomotive and is dual powered, capable of operating electrically from 750V DC third rail or via a small on board diesel engine. The relatively low power of the diesel engine (600 HP) and the scarcity of third rail supply means that the locomotive rarely operates outside the Southern Region.

Forty nine Class 73s were built in total. The first six were built by BR at their Eastleigh works in 1962 and were designated Type JA. The remaining forty three locomotives were built by English Electric at Vulcan Foundry at Newton Le Willows between 1965 and 1967 and were designated type JB. The later type JB had a slightly higher power output with a top speed increase from 80 to 90 mph. Since the privatisation of BR many Class 73s were acquired by the smaller operators and have been seen in many different liveries.

At least eleven locomotives survive into preservation and several are still in use with GBRF and Network Rail.

Features

  • Detailed body with etched grills and separately fitted handrails
  • RP25.100 darkened wheels
  • Metal sprung buffers
  • 5 pole Super creep motor with twin brass fly wheels for controlled pulling power and incredible slow running speed
  • All wheel drive and pick up
  • Independent directional lights & cab lighting
  • Accessory bag with optional fitted components

N Scale Class 68 Locomotive - New Liveries

The Class 68 is a brand new diesel-electric Bo-Bo locomotive commissioned by DRS for intermodal and passenger use. The design is based on the Vossloh Eurolight, with 4 axles and a 3800HP diesel engine and is to be built at the Vossloh plant in Spain. Initially, DRS initially ordered fifteen locomotives with the first to be operational early in 2014. The locomotive is capable of 100mph and has a state of the art adhesion control system which ensures high utilisation of available traction power. Further Locomotives have now been added to the UK fleet bringing the total to 34 currently in service. Stadler are now assembling the Class 68 alongside the Class 88.

The Class 68 is Dapol's first ‘Next Generation’ Diesel model, with entirely re-designed chassis and electronics. This model reproduces all the detail and functionality of their OO Scale model (other than Halo-lights) and incorporates their new iron cored 5-pole motor, offering excellent slow running and exceptional pulling power with reliability and robustness.
