New EFE Road Buses Announced
EFE have just announced four new Alexander Y-Types.
The Alexander Y-Type was built by Walter Alexander & Co in Falkirk, Scotland, with production starting in 1963 after prototypes appeared in 1961. Over 3,200 were produced in various lengths and window styles, the majority for the Scottish Bus Group. Its modular construction made it adaptable to different chassis, most notably the Leyland Leopard and AEC Reliance, with options for doors, seating layouts, and finishes tailored to operators’ needs.
In 1971, the design evolved into the AY and AYS Types with alloy construction and a revised front end, before being succeeded by the lighter P Type in 1983. Potteries Motor Traction operated around 25 Y-Types, including FEH168J, a 49-seat AY-Type on an AEC Reliance chassis, shown here as PMT No. 168 in National Bus Company red and white. The latest EFE Road model recreates this vehicle in 1:76 scale, featuring upgraded details such as mirrors, opaque roof vents, and separate 2-leaf doors.
