The Alexander Y-Type was one of the most iconic British bus and coach designs, produced by Walter Alexander & Co (Coachbuilders) Ltd at its Falkirk works in Scotland. The first prototypes appeared in 1961, with production models entering service from 1963. Over the next two decades, 3,266 examples were built, including both small-window buses and large-window coaches in short and long-bodied versions. More than 2,800 of these vehicles were supplied to the Scottish Bus Group and its predecessors.

The Y-Type’s modular construction made it extremely versatile and adaptable. It could be fitted to a wide range of chassis types, including the Leyland Leopard, AEC Reliance, Seddon Pennine 7, and Ford R series. Operators could choose from a variety of configurations such as single-piece, 2-leaf or 4-leaf entrance doors, along with numerous seating layouts to suit specific service requirements.

Throughout its 20-year production run, the design evolved with new front-end styles and headlight arrangements. In 1971, the updated alloy-bodied versions became known as the AY or AYS Type, featuring twin grilles within an elongated front moulding. The Y-Type was eventually replaced by the lighter and more modern P-Type in 1983, though many examples continued in service well into the 2000s.

Potteries Motor Traction (PMT) operated around 25 Y-Types, taking delivery of the final six in 1971. Among these was registration FEH168J, a dual-purpose 49-seat AY-Type built on an AEC Reliance chassis with 2-leaf doors. This model depicts PMT No. 168 as it appeared under National Bus Company ownership in the mid-1970s, wearing red and white livery and working Service 23 to Hanley. The model is based on EFE Road’s updated AY-Type coach tooling and features fine details including mirrors, opaque glazed roof vents, and separate 2-leaf doors.
