How to power your model railway is a question posed by every railway modeller and ideally you have decided that before you get started. However, with many modellers beginning the hobby with the Analogue DC controller supplied in a starter set, this is rarely possible as nearly everyone begins the hobby in this way. Very soon the issue raises its head as 'train set controllers' are really just that and are designed 'at a price' in order to power a train set. Once you go beyond that, you'll need more power and a decision needs to be made.
There are two main options
A really simple and cost effective control method, so ideal for the beginner. If the main motivation for your model railway is simply to see trains go round, then this is the style of control for you.
Digital command control can really bring your model railway to life. If your layout is based around an engine shed or freight yard where there is complex shunting, it's a gamechanger in terms of ease of operation. It also opens up the possibility of sound-fitted locomotives, where the decoder is programmed with sounds that are activated by the motion of the train and delivered via an on-board speaker. These sounds are incredibly realistic and are usually recorded from real life examples, adding an extra dimension to your model railway.
