The Alexander Y-Type was one of the most enduring and versatile British bus designs, produced by Walter Alexander & Co (Coachbuilders) Ltd at its Falkirk works in Scotland. Prototypes first appeared in 1961, with production models entering service from 1963. Over the following two decades, 3,266 examples were built, including both small-window buses and large-window coaches in long and short-bodied versions. More than 2,800 of these were delivered to the Scottish Bus Group and its predecessors.

The Y-Type’s modular construction made it a flexible and adaptable design, capable of being built on a variety of chassis types. While the Leyland Leopard was the most common, other chassis included the AEC Reliance, Seddon Pennine 7, and Ford R series. Operators could specify single-piece, 2-leaf or 4-leaf entrance doors, along with different seating configurations depending on operational needs.

Throughout its 20-year production span, the Y-Type’s appearance evolved, with new grille and headlight arrangements introduced over time. In 1971, the alloy-bodied AY and AYS Types were launched, featuring a refined front design with twin grilles. The Y-Type was succeeded by the lighter, more modern P-Type in 1983, though many remained in service well into the 2000s.

AY-Type registration MFR18P was built in 1976 for Lancaster City Council on a Leyland Leopard chassis with 4-leaf doors. It later joined the Stevensons of Uttoxeter fleet, carrying a distinctive yellow livery promoting Stevensons Express Services to Blackpool, North Wales, Skegness and the South Coast. This model captures fleet number 18 in its 1984 condition, operating Service X38 to Burton via Lichfield. Based on EFE Road’s updated AY-Type coach tooling, the model includes enhanced details such as mirrors, opaque glazed roof vents, and separate 4-leaf doors.
