The locomotives were built for the French State Railways (SNCF) between 1963 and 1968 The A1AA1A 68000 series was built in 80 copies. Originally planned as a four-axle vehicle, the 68000 had an engine weight that was too high for these four axles and, as a result, the axle pressures were too high, which led to the conversion to three-axle bogies. As a remedy, a running axle with smaller wheels was installed in the middle of the bogie. The six-axle, diesel-electric locomotive had an operating weight of 106 tons. With its 12-cylinder diesel engine and 1,660 kW, it reached a top speed of 130 km/h.
In the original version, the locomotives had decorative lines that made the locomotive's face unmistakable. Their area of application was heavy travel and freight traffic. Until the 1980s, the 68000 was also regularly seen in Germany, where it came on trips via Strasbourg to Kehl and Offenburg. Further planned missions led from Metz to Trier, but also via Mulhouse to Basel in Switzerland.
