?The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was a long-range, high-altitude strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed by the United States in the 1960s. Designed by Lockheed's Skunk Works division under Clarence "Kelly" Johnson, it was introduced in 1966 and served in the U.S. Air Force until its retirement in 1998. The SR-71 was capable of speeds exceeding Mach 3 and altitudes over 85,000 feet, making it the fastest and highest-flying air-breathing manned aircraft. It utilized advanced avionics and reconnaissance equipment, including side-looking airborne radar and optical cameras. The aircraft's speed and altitude allowed it to evade enemy missiles and interceptors, contributing to its reputation as a formidable reconnaissance platform. Despite its advanced capabilities, the SR-71 was retired due to high operational costs and the advent of satellite reconnaissance technologies. Today, several SR-71s are preserved in museums, serving as a testament to Cold War-era aviation innovation.
