Historical Background

Commissioned in 1938, HMS Cossack was one of the Royal Navy's powerful Tribal-class destroyers, designed for fleet escort and offensive operations. She achieved worldwide recognition during the famous Altmark Incident in February 1940, when her crew rescued nearly 300 Allied prisoners from the German tanker Altmark. HMS Cossack later served on Atlantic convoy escort duties before being torpedoed in 1941 while protecting a convoy, cementing her place as one of the Royal Navy's most distinguished destroyers of the Second World War.
