Historical Background

Robin Hood is one of the most enduring figures in English folklore, with stories dating back to at least the 14th and 15th centuries in medieval ballads and oral tradition. He is typically portrayed as an outlaw living in Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, who “robs from the rich and gives to the poor,” opposing corrupt authority figures such as the Sheriff of Nottingham.

While there is no single confirmed historical Robin Hood, historians have proposed several possible inspirations ranging from minor nobles to outlaw bands operating in medieval England. The earliest surviving references appear in works such as Piers Plowman (late 1300s) and later expanded in popular ballads and plays during the Late Middle Ages and Tudor period.

Over time, the legend evolved into a structured narrative featuring key characters such as Maid Marian, Friar Tuck, Little John, and the Sheriff of Nottingham, becoming a symbol of resistance against injustice and excessive taxation. By the 19th century, Robin Hood had been firmly established in popular literature as a romantic heroic outlaw figure, especially through retellings in Victorian-era books and children’s stories.

Today, Robin Hood remains a major cultural figure in English heritage, frequently adapted in film, television, and literature, and strongly associated with Nottinghamshire tourism and Sherwood Forest heritage sites.
