Historical Background
The term Ancient Britons generally refers to the Celtic-speaking peoples of Britain during the Iron Age, roughly from around 800 BC up to the Roman invasion in AD 43. These societies were organised into tribal kingdoms, each led by local chieftains rather than a single central authority.
Their culture is known through a mixture of archaeological evidence and accounts from Roman writers such as Julius Caesar, who described Britain during his expeditions in 55–54 BC. These accounts are partly biased, but they do provide insight into how the Romans viewed Iron Age warfare and society.
Iron Age Britons were skilled in skirmish-style warfare, using spears, swords, and shields decorated with distinctive Celtic patterns. Some tribes are described as using war chariots, which provided mobility and psychological impact on the battlefield. These chariots were typically used to transport elite warriors who would dismount to fight on foot.
Warrior culture was closely tied to status, honour, and tribal loyalty, with displays of bravery playing an important social role. Some historical and classical sources mention practices such as war cries, body decoration (including woad dye in later traditions), and elaborate weaponry, though the exact accuracy of these descriptions is debated by historians.
The most famous Iron Age Britons include figures such as Boudica of the Iceni tribe, who led a major uprising against Roman rule in AD 60–61 after the Roman conquest began under Emperor Claudius in AD 43. Although ultimately unsuccessful, this rebellion became a lasting symbol of resistance in British history.
After the Roman conquest, many aspects of Iron Age tribal culture were gradually absorbed or replaced by Roman administration, marking the transition from prehistoric Britain to Roman Britain.
