Historical Background

Commissioned in 1928, HMS Suffolk served with distinction throughout the Second World War. She became famous during the Battle of the Denmark Strait in May 1941, where her advanced radar enabled her to maintain contact with the German battleship Bismarck after the loss of HMS Hood. Suffolk's continuous shadowing of the enemy provided the intelligence needed for the Royal Navy to intercept and ultimately sink Bismarck, making her one of the unsung heroes of one of history's most famous naval engagements. She later served in the Atlantic, Arctic, and Eastern Fleet before being decommissioned after the war.
