Historical Background

Commissioned in 1927 as the lead ship of the Nelson-class, HMS Nelson was built under the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty and featured an innovative design with all three 16-inch main gun turrets mounted forward of the superstructure. During the Second World War she served in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, supporting major Allied operations including the invasions of North Africa, Sicily and Italy. HMS Nelson was also present at the Japanese surrender in Singapore in 1945, concluding an illustrious wartime career.
