Historical Background

Commissioned in 1939, Scharnhorst was one of the most powerful surface warships of the German Kriegsmarine. Designed for speed and long-range commerce raiding, she conducted operations in the Atlantic alongside her sister ship Gneisenau, disrupting Allied shipping and tying down significant Royal Navy resources. She also took part in the famous Channel Dash (Operation Cerberus) before her final mission in December 1943, when she was intercepted and sunk by British forces led by HMS Duke of York during the Battle of the North Cape. Her dramatic career has made Scharnhorst one of the most recognisable warships of the Second World War.
