Historical Background
The set represents British Army infantry support units during the Second World War (1939–1945). During this period, British infantry divisions were structured as combined-arms formations, where infantry units were supported by artillery, mortars, and machine-gun teams to increase battlefield effectiveness.
A key element of British infantry firepower was the 25-pounder field gun, one of the most successful artillery pieces of the war. It combined high explosive firepower with indirect fire capability, allowing British forces to engage enemy positions at range while remaining mobile.
The Bren light machine gun provided squad-level automatic fire, valued for its reliability and accuracy. Meanwhile, the Lee-Enfield rifle remained the standard infantry weapon, known for its durability and fast bolt-action rate in trained hands.
Mortar teams provided close support indirect fire, capable of targeting enemy positions hidden from direct line of sight. These combined weapons formed the backbone of British infantry tactics, which emphasised coordination between infantry and supporting fire units rather than reliance on infantry alone.
By the later stages of WWII, British infantry divisions had become increasingly motorised and better equipped, allowing for greater operational flexibility across different theatres such as North-West Europe, North Africa, and Italy.
