Bring specialist Second World War mountain warfare units into your model collection with the Airfix German Mountain Troops A04713V, part of the Vintage Classics range. This 1:32 scale plastic kit depicts German Gebirgsjäger (mountain troops), designed for dioramas and military scenes set in alpine or winter environments.
The set contains 49 plastic parts, representing lightly equipped infantry trained for high-altitude combat. It includes figures in skiing and climbing poses, along with mountain warfare equipment and supporting accessories. The kit is a Skill Level 2 release, making it suitable for modellers with some experience, while still accessible to beginners.

Historical Background
The Gebirgsjäger were elite light infantry units of the German Army during the Second World War, specially trained for combat in mountainous, arctic, and extreme terrain. They were designed to operate where conventional infantry struggled, including the Alps, the Balkans, Norway, and the Caucasus Mountains.
A key feature of these units was their emphasis on mobility and endurance in harsh conditions. Soldiers were trained in skiing, climbing, and survival techniques, allowing them to operate effectively in snow, ice, and steep terrain. Their equipment was adapted accordingly, often including lighter weapons, additional ammunition, climbing gear, skis, and pack animals rather than heavy battlefield loads.
Gebirgsjäger formations were first deployed in major operations such as the invasion of Norway in 1940, and later saw extensive combat in the Balkans, Italy, and the Eastern Front, particularly in mountainous regions like the Caucasus. Their adaptability made them highly effective in specialised roles, including defensive mountain positions and rapid assaults in difficult terrain.
However, their wartime record is complex. While they were respected for their training and capability, some Gebirgsjäger units were also implicated in war crimes during operations in occupied territories, particularly in the Balkans, which is an important part of their historical legacy.
After the Second World War, the tradition of mountain infantry continued in several European armies, including modern German Bundeswehr Gebirgsjäger units, which still operate today in a humanitarian and defensive role.
