Historical Background

Commissioned in August 1940, Prinz Eugen was one of the most capable heavy cruisers of the German Kriegsmarine. She gained international recognition during Operation Rheinübung in May 1941, when she accompanied the battleship Bismarck into the North Atlantic. During the Battle of the Denmark Strait, Prinz Eugen engaged HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales before successfully breaking away and reaching Brest in occupied France. Unlike many of Germany's major surface warships, Prinz Eugen survived the war, surrendering to Allied forces in Copenhagen in 1945. She was later transferred to the United States Navy and used during the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946, surviving both nuclear explosions before eventually capsizing later that year.
