Historical Background

Roman forts were a central feature of the Roman military system during the occupation of Britain from AD 43 to around AD 410. They were strategically placed across the landscape to control territory, protect supply routes, and maintain order in newly conquered regions.

A typical Roman fort followed a highly standardised design, often laid out in a rectangular grid pattern with defensive walls, gates, barracks, granaries, and headquarters buildings (principia). This standardisation reflected the Roman Army’s emphasis on organisation, discipline, and logistical efficiency.

Forts were usually built initially from timber and earth, later being rebuilt in stone as Roman control became more established. They housed a garrison of soldiers ranging from small auxiliary units to larger legionary detachments depending on location and strategic importance.

One of the most famous examples in Britain is Hadrian’s Wall, constructed in the early 2nd century under Emperor Hadrian. A chain of forts and milecastles along the wall formed a defensive frontier system marking the northern boundary of Roman Britain and controlling movement between Roman territory and the tribes of northern Britain.

Roman forts were not only military installations but also administrative centres, helping to introduce Roman infrastructure, law, taxation, and culture into Britain. Over time, many developed surrounding civilian settlements (vici), forming the seeds of later towns.

Even after the Roman withdrawal in the early 5th century, the layout and influence of these forts remained visible in Britain’s developing landscape and settlement patterns.
