Historical Background
Introduced into cross-Channel service in 1969, the SR.N4 Mountbatten Class transformed passenger travel between Britain and mainland Europe. Operated by Hoverlloyd and Seaspeed, these remarkable hovercraft could travel at speeds exceeding 60 knots (around 70 mph) while carrying hundreds of passengers and dozens of vehicles. Powered by four Rolls-Royce Proteus gas turbine engines driving enormous variable-pitch propellers, the SR.N4 was one of the most ambitious civilian hovercraft ever built. Its ability to travel seamlessly over both land and water allowed it to operate from dedicated terminals rather than conventional ports, making it one of the most iconic transport innovations of the Cold War era.
