The English Electric Lightning is a British supersonic fighter aircraft developed in the 1950s and famed as the only UK-designed fighter capable of exceeding Mach 2 in level flight. Designed and built by English Electric, later part of the British Aircraft Corporation, it served primarily with the Royal Air Force (RAF), with export operators including the Royal Saudi Air Force.

Developed to counter the threat of high-speed Soviet bombers, the Lightning’s unique design featured twin Rolls-Royce Avon engines stacked vertically within the fuselage, giving it exceptional rate of climb and acceleration. The prototype, known as P.1, first flew in 1954, proving the innovative concept and leading to production models.

The Lightning entered RAF service in 1960 with the F.1 variant, followed by F.2, F.3, and F.6 models with enhanced avionics, weapons, and range. Known for its sleek fuselage, highly swept wings, and raw performance, it remained Britain’s frontline interceptor through the 1960s to the 1980s, retiring in 1988.

Today, surviving Lightnings in museums and private collections make the aircraft a popular subject for scale model builders, especially in 1:72, 1:48, and larger scales, offering enthusiasts a chance to recreate a legendary Cold War interceptor with iconic British design.
