History:

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is widely regarded as the Luftwaffe’s most important fighter aircraft of the Second World War. Designed by Professor Willy Messerschmitt, the prototype first flew in May 1935 and went on to win a major design competition against Arado, Heinkel and Focke-Wulf thanks to its impressive speed and superb manoeuvrability. Entering service as the Bf 109 A-0 in 1937, early variants saw action with the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War and subsequently with the Luftwaffe during the Invasion of Poland.

A significant step forward came with the Bf 109 E, introduced in late 1938. This version replaced the earlier Junkers Jumo 210 with the more powerful Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine. To manage the increased heat output, the cooling system was redesigned with larger radiators moved from the nose to strengthened wings. The “Emil” became an iconic presence in the Battle of Britain, engaging RAF Spitfires and Hurricanes throughout 1940.

Development progressed rapidly, and by late 1940 the Bf 109 F was ready for service. Featuring the DB 601E engine, refined aerodynamics and reduced-area wings with rounded tips, it marked a major improvement in handling. A redesigned tailplane removed the need for external bracing, while increased fuel capacity extended the aircraft’s range to approximately 1,060 miles (1,700 km).

The introduction of the DB 605 engine created the next major variant, the Bf 109 G “Gustav”. Easier to manufacture and delivering 1,455 bhp, this engine allowed for significant performance gains. The pressurised G-1 entered production in February 1942, followed by the non-pressurised G-2 a few months later. In 1943, the switch from 7.92 mm MG 17s to 13 mm MG 131 machine guns resulted in the distinctive bulged cowlings seen on the G-5 and G-6 variants. More than 12,000 examples of the G-series were built.

The Gustav could be heavily armed, fitted with under-wing MG 151/20 cannon gondolas, bombs, rockets and a 300-litre drop tank for extended range. Tropicalised versions served in the harsh conditions of North Africa, proving the airframe’s adaptability.

First issued to units such as JG 27, 51, 53 and 77 in the Mediterranean, the Bf 109 G went on to become one of the most widely deployed Luftwaffe fighters on both the Western and Eastern Fronts. It was from the cockpit of a Bf 109 that Germany’s highest-scoring ace, Erich Hartmann, achieved his claimed 352 aerial victories.
