Details
The ADtranz low floor tram was an innovative German articulated tram introduced in the 1990s as the world’s first fully low-floor tram, designed to eliminate steps throughout the passenger area for easy, level boarding. The prototype, GT6N number 3801, was developed for the Bremen tram system and unveiled on 9 February 1990 before extensive testing across Europe. It marked a major advance in accessibility, benefiting passengers with wheelchairs, strollers, or limited mobility.
ADtranz low floor trams were built in various versions to suit different track gauges and city networks. Standard-gauge models included GT6N (three-section) and GT8N (four-section), while metre-gauge systems used the GT6M designation. Their articulated design, with bogies under each module and innovative wheelset arrangements, allowed a continuous low floor throughout the vehicle — a radical departure from earlier tram designs that required raised sections over wheel-housings.
Many German cities adopted these trams in the 1990s and early 2000s, with significant fleets in Berlin, Munich, Bremen, Jena, Mainz, and Zwickau, among others; some later found second lives in cities like Norrköping in Sweden.
