Details

The DBAG Class 641 is a class of diesel multiple units (DMUs) used by Deutsche Bahn (DB Regio) on rural and branch lines in Germany. Built as part of the Alstom Coradia A TER family, these single-car railcars entered service from 1999 onwards and were developed jointly by DB and French partners, with production by Alstom subsidiaries.

Class 641 units are about 28.9 m long, carry around 80 passengers, and have a top speed of about 120 km/h (75 mph), making them well suited to lighter regional services. Their distinctive bulging body and large swinging doors give them a characteristic look that earned them the nickname “Walfisch” (German for “Whale”).

Only 40 units were delivered to DB, and these can be found on routes in Baden-Württemberg (such as the Hochrhein line) and in Thuringia around Erfurt, including scenic secondary lines like the Schwarzatalbahn and Pfefferminzbahn.
