Details

The EMD Class 77 is a diesel-electric locomotive derived from the highly successful EMD Class 66 (JT42CWR) design, adapted for continental European freight operations. It was developed in the mid-2000s to meet European emissions and performance requirements and is officially designated JT42CWRM-100 by Electro-Motives Diesel. Over 100 locomotives have been built for operators such as Euro Cargo Rail (a DB Schenker subsidiary), with about 60 delivered for heavy freight use in France and other countries.

Class 77s differ from standard Class 66s with modifications including a 12-cylinder EMD 710 engine meeting EU Stage IIIA emissions, enhanced traction gear, and improved crew comforts such as cab air conditioning and extra insulation. They have DC traction motors rated at about 3,300 hp and high tractive effort suited to heavy trains across Belgium, France, Germany and beyond. Because of continental design features like roof-mounted equipment the Class 77 cannot operate in the UK loading gauge but has become a familiar sight on modern European freight corridors.
