Details

The LMS Patriot Class was a class of 4-6-0 express passenger steam locomotives built for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) between 1930 and 1934, with a total of 52 engines constructed. Designed by Sir Henry Fowler, the class combined elements of earlier locomotives, using Royal Scot–type running gear with boilers derived from the LNWR Claughton class. This hybrid design led to their popular nickname, “Baby Scots.”

Patriot Class engines were primarily used on express passenger services, particularly on the West Coast Main Line, and were based at major depots including Crewe and Carlisle. In later years, as newer locomotives and diesel traction appeared, they were also used on mixed-traffic duties.

Between 1946 and 1949, eighteen locomotives were rebuilt with improved boilers, cabs, and tenders, creating the Rebuilt Patriot variant. The remaining unrebuilt engines were gradually withdrawn between 1960 and 1962, and none of the originals survived into preservation.
