Details

The GCR Class 9J, later classified by the LNER as J11, was a large class of 0-6-0 freight steam locomotives designed by John G. Robinson for the Great Central Railway. Built between 1901 and 1910, a total of 174 locomotives were produced by several manufacturers, making the type one of the most numerous freight engines on the GCR.

Designed primarily for heavy goods work, the class became known by the nickname “Pom-Poms,” said to reflect the distinctive sound of their exhaust. During World War I, members of the class served with the Railway Operating Division, demonstrating their usefulness and durability in demanding conditions.

Following the 1923 Grouping, the locomotives passed to the London and North Eastern Railway, where they were classified J11 and divided into several sub-classes reflecting detail differences. The entire class later entered British Railways ownership in 1948, remaining in service until withdrawals took place between 1954 and 1962. None survived into preservation.
