Details

The LMS Fowler Class 4F was a large and widely used class of 0-6-0 steam locomotives designed by Sir Henry Fowler for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). Built between 1924 and 1941, a total of 575 locomotives were produced, making the type one of the most numerous British freight engines of its era. Designed for medium freight duties, the class represented the final development of the Midland Railway’s long line of six-coupled goods engines and was commonly nicknamed “Duck Sixes.”

The 4F was based closely on the Midland Railway 3835 Class, with relatively minor changes, and became a dependable workhorse across the LMS network. After nationalisation in 1948, the entire class passed to British Railways, where they continued in everyday goods service until withdrawals began in 1959, with the last examples retired in 1966.
