Description
K3 Class 61985 BR Lined Early Black
The LNER Class K3, originally known as the GNR Class H4, was a class of 2-6-0 steam locomotives designed by Nigel Gresley for the Great Northern Railway (GNR) in 1920. These locomotives were intended for mixed-traffic duties, efficiently handling both passenger and freight services. Following the 1923 grouping, they became part of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) and were classified as K3. A total of 193 units were built between 1920 and 1937, with construction spread across Doncaster Works, Darlington Works, Armstrong Whitworth, Robert Stephenson & Co., and the North British Locomotive Company. The K3s were nicknamed "Jazzers" due to the distinctive rhythm of their exhaust beat. All were withdrawn and scrapped between 1959 and 1962, with none preserved.
