Historical Background

The LMS Ivatt Class 2 2-6-0 was one of the last new steam locomotive designs introduced by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway before nationalisation. Designed by H. G. Ivatt and built between 1946 and 1953, the class was created to replace elderly Victorian-era locomotives on lightly loaded passenger and freight duties across the LMS network. A total of 128 engines were constructed at Crewe, Darlington and Swindon Works.

Using the versatile 2-6-0 “Mogul” wheel arrangement, the Ivatt design offered excellent route availability, economical operation and dependable performance. The locomotives were essentially the tender version of Ivatt’s successful 2-6-2T tank engines, but with increased coal and water capacity that allowed them to operate over longer rural and secondary routes. Featuring outside cylinders, Walschaerts valve gear and modern labour-saving fittings, the class proved popular with both crews and maintenance staff.

Under British Railways the locomotives received the classification 2MT, indicating their light mixed-traffic role. Affectionately nicknamed “Mickey Mouse” engines by railwaymen and enthusiasts, the class became a familiar sight across Britain during the 1950s, particularly on branch line passenger trains, pick-up goods services and cross-country workings. Their practical design later influenced the development of the BR Standard Class 2 2-6-0 locomotives.

Withdrawals began in 1961 as diesel traction rapidly replaced steam throughout the British Railways network, and the final examples disappeared in 1967. Fortunately, seven members of the class survived into preservation, including No. 46443, No. 46464 and No. 46521, several of which continue to operate on heritage railways today. Their compact size, distinctive appearance and branch line character have made the Ivatt 2MT Moguls enduring favourites among preservationists and model railway enthusiasts alike.
