Details

The British Rail Class 150 “Sprinter” is a diesel multiple unit (DMU) introduced by British Rail between 1984 and 1987. Built by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) at York, a total of 137 two-car units were constructed to modernise regional and suburban services across the UK, replacing ageing first-generation DMUs. Designed for improved reliability and passenger comfort, the Class 150 was part of a broader “Sprinter” family, intended to meet the growing demand for efficient rail transport.

The first two prototypes, 150001 and 150002, were delivered in 1984 as three-car sets for testing. They demonstrated the viability of the design and were followed by full production units in two subclasses: Class 150/1 (without front-end gangways) and Class 150/2 (with gangways for inter-unit access). Powered by underfloor Cummins diesel engines and equipped with Voith transmissions, the units can reach speeds of up to 75 mph (121 km/h).

Class 150s have seen widespread use across England, Wales, and Scotland, operating on both urban and rural lines. Despite being over three decades old, many remain in service due to their robustness and reliability. The Class 150 continues to be a familiar sight across the UK rail network and a favourite among rail enthusiasts and modellers.
