Details

The 35 Ton Grain Hopper Wagons, widely known as Whisky Covhops (COVered HOPpers), were introduced in the late 1960s to transport grain from regions such as East Anglia and South East England to Scotland’s whisky distilleries. Operated by Associated British Maltsters Ltd. and Scottish Malt Distillers, these 4-wheel wagons offered greater payload capacity than earlier designs. Initially fitted with bold advertising boards, these were soon removed, leaving plain brown liveries, although some later adopted the striking green and grey ‘Grainflow’ scheme. In later years, several were repurposed for alumina traffic before being fully withdrawn by the late twentieth century.
