Details

The POA scrap wagons were introduced during the 1980s to meet growing demand for rail-borne scrap metal traffic in Britain. Built new or converted from redundant wagon types, they featured a rugged open box body designed for loading and unloading by grab cranes or electro-magnets. The wagons entered service in a striking blue and yellow livery and were privately owned by Standard Railfreight, having been constructed by Standard Wagon. In 1990 British Rail purchased the entire fleet of 191 vehicles, which were subsequently recoded as SSA wagons under the Total Operations Processing System (TOPS) for heavy industrial scrap flows nationwide.
