Description

Jubilee Class 5742 'Connaught' LMS Crimson Steam Loco

1:76 scale model produced by Bachmann. This model is ready-to-run straight out of the box and would make a excellent addition to any model railway collection.

Mechanism

The model is powered by a three-pole motor mounted in the locomotive, driving the central set of driving wheels through gearing designed to deliver prototypical running speeds and realistic haulage capabilities. Electrical pickup is provided from all driving wheels, supplemented by additional pickups in the tender for reliable current collection. A die-cast metal chassis block in the locomotive provides weight and stability, while metal valve gear adds durability and authenticity in operation.

The locomotive is fitted with 16.5 mm (OO gauge) wheels manufactured to NEM310 and NEM311 standards, featuring accurate profiles and detailing. An adjustable tender drawbar with integral loco-tender wiring ensures dependable electrical connection. The front bogie is sprung and incorporates a coupling pocket to NEM362 standards, with a detachable NEM362 coupling pocket also fitted to the tender. The model is designed to operate on curves of second radius (438 mm) or greater.

Detailing

A die-cast metal running plate forms the basis of the superstructure, complemented by precision-moulded components including the boiler, firebox, cab, tender tank, and tender chassis. The smokebox door is separately fitted, hinged, and can be posed open or closed. Numerous fine details are separately applied, including the chimney, smokebox saddle, splashers, sandboxes, lubricators, water pick-up gear, reverser, lamp irons, and smokebox door handles.

Further refinement is provided by individual metal components such as handrails and knobs, whistle, safety valves, sandpipes, and tender vents. The cab interior is highly detailed and fully decorated, featuring controls, dials, gauges, and tool cabinets, along with separately fitted valve wheels, regulator, and reverser. Additional features include a hinged and posable metal fall plate between locomotive and tender, a sliding cab roof ventilator, glazed cab windows, and sprung metal buffers.

The tender is fitted with a removable coal-effect load with the empty coal space modelled beneath, while the running gear includes detailed brakes and separately fitted brake components on both locomotive and tender. Each model is supplied with an accessory pack containing cab doors, front steps, and cylinder draincocks for optional fitting.

Lighting, DCC and Sound

Firebox glow lighting is fitted as standard, operating on analogue control, while DCC or sound-fitted models provide enhanced glow and flicker effects. A Plux22 DCC decoder interface is located in the tender, allowing straightforward digital installation.

Sound-fitted versions include a Zimo MS450P22 DCC sound decoder and a tender-mounted speaker for optimum sound reproduction. The sound files are produced specifically for the Bachmann Branchline Jubilee using recordings from real locomotives, and sound-equipped models operate on both DCC and analogue control as supplied.

Livery Application

All models are finished in authentic liveries, using multiple paint applications to achieve accurate colours and depth of finish. Logos, numerals, and lettering are applied using a multi-stage tampo printing process with authentic typefaces and insignia. Models are supplied with pre-fitted printed nameplates, and etched nameplates are also included separately for optional fitting to enhance the level of realism.

Details

The LMS Jubilee Class was a class of 4-6-0 express passenger steam locomotives designed by Sir William Stanier for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. Built between 1934 and 1936, a total of 191 locomotives were produced, making the type one of the LMS’s most numerous main-line passenger engines. They were popularly known as “Jubilees” or “Red Staniers,” reflecting their original crimson livery.

The class developed from the final batch of Patriot locomotives, fitted with Stanier’s taper boiler. Early engines suffered from steaming issues, but modifications to the blastpipe and chimney significantly improved performance, allowing the locomotives to become reliable express performers.

Jubilees worked express passenger services across the LMS network, including the Midland Main Line, West Coast Main Line, and the Settle–Carlisle route, and were commonly seen hauling principal passenger trains from the 1930s through the 1950s.

Withdrawals began in 1960, with the final examples leaving service in 1967. Four locomotives survive in preservation, ensuring the class remains well known among enthusiasts and modellers.
