Details
Introduced by British Railways between 1951 and 1963, the BR 27-ton Steel Tippler Wagon was designed for high-capacity bulk transport of minerals such as iron ore, stone and chalk. Built at several BR workshops, including Shildon and Ashford, these robust steel wagons featured a doorless body specifically engineered for unloading by rotary tippler equipment. They became a common sight in the East Midlands iron ore fields, feeding steelworks and processing plants, and later found widespread use in stone traffic. Their simple, heavy-duty construction and distinctive operation make them an iconic and highly recognisable wagon for British model railway layouts depicting post-war freight operations.
