Details

The HHA Bogie Hopper Wagons, introduced in 2000, were among the largest wagons to operate on the UK network, measuring almost 20 metres in length. With a 73.5-tonne capacity and four automatic discharge doors, Freightliner assembled a fleet of 446 HHAs by 2005, primarily for coal traffic. As coal use declined, many were withdrawn, stored or scrapped, while others were adapted for new roles. A significant number were shortened to carry stone, a denser material requiring less volume, enabling full payload capacity. These modified wagons were reclassified as HHA-E, extending their usefulness in modern bulk freight operations.
