Details

The HKA Bogie Hopper Wagons originated from JMA Coal Hoppers ordered by National Power in the mid-1990s. Following acquisition by EWS, many received upgraded bogies and were reclassified as HKAs, with their use expanded beyond coal into aggregate traffic. Operating in fixed rakes, HKAs feature conventional buffers and couplings only at the outer ends, while inner wagons are connected by buckeye couplers without buffers. This arrangement improved efficiency and reduced maintenance. The fleet became a common sight on heavy bulk flows across the UK, and many examples continue to serve in aggregate operations today.
