Details

Britain’s railways were originally developed to move freight, and early railway companies operated a wide variety of covered vans to carry goods and merchandise requiring protection from the weather. Each company produced its own designs, with the Southern Railway distinguished by its characteristic elliptical-roof vans. Early examples were clad with planks of even width, while later builds adopted mixed plank widths in a 2+2 pattern, followed eventually by plywood panelling. End-mounted ventilators were a key feature, allowing air to circulate through the van and helping to keep perishable goods cool during transit.
