James the Red Engine is a fictional steam locomotive from The Railway Series books by Wilbert Awdry and the television series Thomas & Friends. He is a tender engine numbered 5 on the North Western Railway, known for his red livery and pride in his appearance. James debuted in the 1946 book Thomas the Tank Engine and was later featured in his own book, James the Red Engine, published in 1948. In the series, James is depicted as a mixed-traffic engine, capable of pulling both passenger coaches and freight trucks. His character is often portrayed as somewhat vain and occasionally gets into trouble due to his overconfidence. James has been a prominent character in various Thomas & Friends media, including films and merchandise.
