Background

Within the Mobile Suit Gundam Universal Century setting, the RX-78-2 was developed by the Earth Federation Forces during the One Year War (U.C. 0079) under the “Project V” initiative.

It was created as a prototype mobile suit to counter Zeon’s early battlefield advantage. Key technological advances included beam weapon systems, improved mobility through high-performance thrusters, and the use of Gundarium alloy armour for increased durability.

The unit is most famously piloted by Amuro Ray, a civilian who becomes an unexpectedly skilled combat pilot. The RX-78-2’s adaptability, especially its learning computer system, allows it to improve performance during combat engagements.

Its success influenced all later Federation mobile suit development and established many of the design principles used across the Universal Century timeline.
