The PG Unleashed RX-78-2 Gundam is a 1/60 scale Perfect Grade snap-fit model kit representing the original Mobile Suit Gundam protagonist machine. It is widely regarded as one of Bandai’s most advanced Gunpla releases, designed to simulate a step-by-step “mechanical construction” experience that mirrors how a real mobile suit might be assembled.

The kit uses a highly detailed multi-layer internal frame system, built first before the outer armour is added. Background

In the Universal Century timeline of Mobile Suit Gundam, the RX-78-2 Gundam is a prototype mobile suit developed by the Earth Federation Forces during the One Year War (U.C. 0079) as part of Project V.

It was designed to counter the Principality of Zeon’s early mobile suit advantage, introducing advanced technologies such as beam weaponry, high-performance thrusters, and experimental materials like Gundarium alloy armour. Its onboard systems include a learning computer that adapts performance based on combat data gathered from its pilot.

The mobile suit is most famously piloted by Amuro Ray, a civilian who becomes an exceptionally skilled combat operator over the course of the war. The RX-78-2’s battlefield performance helps shift the balance of power in favour of the Earth Federation and establishes the foundation for all later Federation mobile suit development.

Because of its historical significance within the story, the RX-78-2 is often referred to as the prototype that defines the modern mobile suit concept in the Universal Century.
