Details
The GNR Class H3 was a class of British 0-6-0 steam locomotives designed by Henry Ivatt for the Great Northern Railway (GNR) and introduced in 1906. Built for reliable freight and shunting duties, these locomotives featured a simple, sturdy design with inside cylinders and moderate driving wheels, making them well-suited to everyday goods workings across the GNR network.
When the GNR became part of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923, the Class H3 locomotives were reclassified as the LNER Class J13, continuing their service life hauling freight and secondary passenger trains well into the British Railways era. Their straightforward engineering and ease of maintenance kept them in regular use until withdrawal in the late 1950s, as more modern diesel and steam types took over.
