Historical Background

The Airbus A330 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) is a military conversion of the Airbus A330-200 airliner, developed to provide air-to-air refuelling, strategic transport, and medical evacuation capability in a single platform. It is one of the most widely adopted modern tanker aircraft in service with multiple air forces around the world.

The Royal Australian Air Force became the launch customer for the A330 MRTT, designating it the KC-30A Voyager, with initial deliveries entering service in 2011. Operated by No. 33 Squadron from RAAF Base Amberley, the fleet plays a critical role in extending the range and endurance of Australia’s combat and transport aircraft.

Aircraft A39-006 “Rosewood” is part of this strategic fleet and is capable of carrying over 100 tonnes of fuel for aerial refuelling missions, or alternatively configured for passenger and cargo transport.
