Details

The locomotive known as the 119 series was developed for use on key branch lines and various other demanding routes. Despite high hopes, both the initial prototypes and the production series delivered from the late 1970s fell short of expectations. Although its design was based on the proven class 118, the 119 series suffered frequent setbacks due to material flaws and manufacturing issues.

It was only after the original licence-built engines from Romania were replaced with reliable 118 engines from GDR production that the 119 series evolved into a dependable locomotive. From then on, it operated successfully in front of light and medium express trains, handled medium freight services, ran passenger trains, and served on important branch lines.
