Details

At the end of the 1980s, PKP required a new locomotive series capable of sustained speeds of 160 km/h to support fast passenger services between Warsaw and Krakow. The EP05 series, converted from the EU05 starting in 1973, were limited in number and ageing. In response, Pafawag designed the new 104E locomotive type in Wroclaw. These locomotives exceeded expectations, leading PKP to acquire an additional 45 units by 1997. The EP09 series was deployed nationwide, effectively replacing the EP05 across Poland.
